Most rejected German applications from India are not rejected on merit. They are rejected on paperwork — and uni-assist is where that usually happens.
uni-assist is not a university and it is not a government body. It is a central service that many German universities use to receive and pre-check international applications. You send your documents once to uni-assist; it verifies that your degree, marksheets and grades are what you say they are, converts your marks into the German grading scale, and passes the result to the universities you selected.
The important thing to understand is what uni-assist does not do. It does not decide whether you are admitted. It does not assess your motivation, your research or your fit for the programme. It is a document gate. Passing it means your file is legible to a German university; it means nothing more than that.
This trips up almost every first-time applicant. Some German universities process international applications entirely in-house through their own portals, some route everything through uni-assist, and some do a mix depending on the faculty. There is no single rule you can memorise.
So the first job in any German application is unglamorous: for each university on your list, check how that specific programme wants to receive your application. Applying through the wrong channel does not get corrected for you — it simply does not arrive.
Send us your degree, marksheets and target universities. We will tell you what uni-assist will object to before you spend the fee and lose a semester.
Check my documents free →Some universities do not want a full uni-assist application; they want a VPD, a preliminary review documentation. It is essentially uni-assist confirming your qualification and your converted grade, which you then submit yourself to the university.
If a programme asks for a VPD and you send a normal application, or the other way round, you lose time you usually cannot afford — VPDs take weeks to come back, and they are frequently requested close to a deadline.
uni-assist charges a handling fee for the first programme in an application term and a smaller fee for each additional programme in the same term. The exact amounts are set by uni-assist and are revised from time to time, so we will not quote a number here that could be out of date by the time you read it — check the current fee on their official site, or ask us and we will confirm what applies to your case.
What matters more than the fee is this: the money is not refunded if your documents are wrong. That is the real cost of a careless application.
First, sending marksheets that are not officially certified in the way the university asks for. Second, missing a semester marksheet and assuming the consolidated one is enough. Third, name mismatches between passport, degree and application — a middle name present on one and absent on another is enough to stall a file. Fourth, applying to the wrong channel, as above. Fifth, and most costly, starting so late that the document verification cannot finish before the deadline.
None of these are intelligence problems. They are process problems, and they are entirely preventable if someone checks your file before you submit it.
Work backwards. Your programme has a deadline. uni-assist verification takes weeks, not days, and gets slower as the deadline approaches because everyone applies late. If Germany is your target, your documents should be moving months before the application deadline, not in the final fortnight.
For life-science applicants there is a second reason to start early: the strongest part of your file is usually your project or lab record, and that takes time to build. Rushing the paperwork usually means you also rushed the part that actually wins the seat.
Is uni-assist compulsory for every German university?
No. Some universities process international applications themselves. You must check the requirement for each programme you apply to — there is no universal rule.
Does paying uni-assist improve my chance of admission?
Not at all. uni-assist verifies documents; it does not assess merit or influence the decision. Admission is decided by the university.
How long does uni-assist take?
Plan for several weeks, and longer close to deadlines when volumes are high. Never assume it will be quick.
What is a VPD?
A preliminary review documentation — uni-assist confirming your qualification and converted grade, which you then submit to the university yourself. Some universities require it instead of a full uni-assist application.
